H. pylori infection occurs when bacteria called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the stomach or first part of the small intestine.
H. pylori infection is believed to be present in about half of people in the world. The developing countries, the ratio is 70%. For many people, H. pylori infection have no signs or symptoms and does not lead to any complications. But for others, H. pylori can lead to serious complications, such as ulcers and stomach cancer.
In the US, H. pylori infection rates are declining. Simultaneously, the rate of serious complications is reduced.
